Supporting Our Unique and Diverse Learners
Lancashire Elementary provides MLL services to students whose native language is not English. Our students are extraordinary—with nearly 30 English Language Learners coming from many different countries. Our students’ diversity enriches every aspect of the learning experience.
Lancashire provides language support services using primarily an inclusion/push-in model that allows us to provide direct language instruction and regular classroom support based on students’ needs. Our program is designed to help students develop English language proficiency in order to meet district and Common Core State Standards, to access the mainstream curriculum, and to provide educational opportunities to become responsible citizens who use English to communicate with others. Instruction of each MLL student is determined by their level of English language proficiency. Students develop competencies in the four language domains: reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
At Lancashire, and in the Brandywine School District, we provide a continuum of services based on each child’s individual needs. General and special education teachers and support staff work collaboratively with students and families to create a meaningful education program in the least restrictive environment. We support students’ academic, behavior, and social-emotional development through evidence based interventions and strategies. We believe ALL children benefit from inclusive practices.
